Women Out west
In 2018, the Office of Police & Crime Commissioner Cumbria (OPCC) and Copeland Borough Council asked us to work together to build a “Women Centre”. This would be a day centre where women who were experiencing domestic abuse could access specialist support in West Cumbria.
Cumbria already had two excellent women centres; Women Community Matters in Barrow and Gateway 4 Women in Carlisle, but there was no Women Centre in West Cumbria.
Working together with Copeland Women Network, Cumbria Probation Service and PCC Peter McCall, Women Community Matters & Gateway 4 Women, £170K from the Ministry of Justice was awarded in January 2019 to build Women Out West (WOW) in Whitehaven, and in June 2019 we opened the doors
Over the next few years hundreds of women received support at Women Out West. In April 2023, we successfully transferred over the running of the Women Out West service to Cumbria Gateway 4 Women. We wish Cumbria Gateway 4 Women and their team all the success going forward! Our involvement in Women Out West project is now complete.
