About Time to Change (West Cumbria) project CIC

The Time to Change (West Cumbria) Project has been set up as a CIC.

What is a CIC?

A community interest company (CIC) is a new type of company introduced by the United Kingdom government in 2005 under the Companies (Audit, Investigations and Community Enterprise) Act 2004, designed for social enterprises that want to use their profits and assets for the public good. CICs are intended to be easy to set up, with all the flexibility and certainty of the company form, but with some special features to ensure they are working for the benefit of the community.

In other words all profits generated from this project will be invested back into the project.

We aim to take a broad approach to working with homeless people – not only providing a roof over their heads, but also encouraging them to develop life skills through:

Volunteering – working in a team on tasks within the local community and in doing so, developing the skills and attitudes that will make it easier for them to find and hold down a job.

Contributing to the management of the hostel – for instance through sharing duties around cooking and cleaning and being more active in managing their lives – from taking control over their finances to addressing negative behaviours.
